Fletch Prequel

The creator of the hit television show Scrubs has been hired to write and direct a prequel to Fletch. Bill Lawrence (Spin City) wants to hire Scrubs star Zach Braff to headline the film. Director Kevin Smith (Clerks 2) spent years fighting to make Fletch Won, before surrendering the project to the studio in late 2005. After Miramax told Smith that Jason Lee was not a bankable star (I'm sure they are slapping themselves upside the head on that one now), Smith moved onto Garden State star Zach Braff. The studio passed on the project, and Smith moved on. Smith's Fletch Won script was very close to the source material, and far from the sketch comedy of the original Chevy Chase film. The producer later stated that they didn't like the direction."His type of comedy just isn't Fletch," said producer David List in October 2005. Lawrence has stated that he plans to make his "Fletch" with a bit more edgier."Zach is perfect for the role," Lawrence said. "I'm going to use all my pull trying to make him do it."The studio hopes to begin production in April, after the current season of Scrubs completes filming.
